This post is part 2 of 16 in the Learn WordPress Basics series

If you are a beginner, the search results for WordPress keywords on Google can confuse you.

Simply because you will find 2 sites WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

In today’s post, I will compare the differences between these two sites. Pros and cons of each page. Finally, I give advice on whether you should choose WordPress.com or WordPress.org.

In case you already have a blog on WordPress.com and want to migrate your blog to a self-hosted solution. Detailed instructions can be found here

WordPress.org

WordPress.org is the home page address where you download the latest WordPress installation. And you can use it to manually install it on your host. So you can freely customize and manage your blog.

It is for this reason that people call WordPress.org WordPress Self-Hosted.

Advantages of WordPress.org

1. You have full control over your blog. You will not be afraid of your blog being deleted just because you violate some silly terms. This is something you never want to happen, is it?

2. You can use any plugin you like.

3. You can use any theme you like. Of course, you can customize the whole theme if you don’t like it.

4. You can make money using your own ads or any other form you want.

Disadvantages of WordPress.org

1. You need to sign up for hosting from a hosting company. That means it costs you about $4-$7 per month. But you do not need to worry too much that the revenue from the blog can completely cover this cost.

2. You must backup your blog data yourself. But out there we have a lot of plugins to help you copy data for example backwpup .

WordPress.com

WorePress.com is a website where you can create a blog for free.

Advantages of WordPress.com:

1. Free up to 3GB of storage space. If you exceed this limit, you pay $19.95 per year for 5GB or $289.97 per year for 10GB

2. The blog site is backed up periodically.

Disadvantages of WordPress.com

1. All the free blogs created on this site are subject to advertising. And if you don’t want the blog to have ads, then you have to pay the WordPress management company $29.97 per year.

2. You cannot sell ads on your site if you do not reach 25,000 pageviews per month. If you make money from advertising you have to share the revenue 50/50

3. You cannot install the plugins you want.

4. You do not install external themes. You can only use the free themes available.

5. WordPress can delete your site at any time if they think you are violating some terms of service.

What is your choice?

If the purpose of your blog is just to have a place to relieve your heart and do not intend to build a serious business like selling, WordPress.com is your choice. But I need to repeat: your blog page can be deleted at any time. It’s still best to use a self-hosted WordPress solution.

On the contrary, you want to treat blogging as a serious career. Or you want to build a website as an affiliate marketing or sales page. I recommend using WordPress.org.

The cost of building a self-hosted website is not too large. And only by doing so will you take advantage of the full power of WordPress.
