WordPress uses Gravatar to display user avatars. This is a third-party service that allows users to have the same profile picture on different websites.
I can’t deny the benefits of Gravatar, but maybe you or your customers don’t like it.
Today I will show you how to disable Gravatar. And replace it with the profile picture uploaded to your website.

Why disable Gravatar in WordPress?
Most of the popular apps these days have support for Gravatar integration. When a user leaves a comment (with an email) on a Gravatar-enabled website, it pulls the user’s avatar from the Gravatar server. That image is then displayed next to the comment.
However, you or your customers may not want to use Gravatar for a number of reasons. Then let’s just disable it.
Disable Gravatar in WordPress
First, log in to the WordPress admin page. Go to Settings » Discussion . In the Avatar section, uncheck the Show avatar checkbox.
Don’t forget to click the Save button.
WordPress will now disable Gravatar on your site. You should now see the general user icon in the admin toolbar instead of the Gravatar image
Similarly, the comments page inside the admin area will also stop showing the Gravatar.
WordPress will also stop displaying Gravatar images in the comments area under your posts and pages.
Replace Gravatar with an image uploaded from the website
What if your client wants to disable Gravatar but still have to display a profile picture for the user?
That is, retaining the avatar function in WordPress and allowing users to upload to the website instead of using images from Gravatar.
To do this, you need to install the WP User Avatars plugin .
Then go back to Settings » Discussion , tick the option ” Prevent avatar requests from reaching out to Gravatar.com “.
Don’t forget to click Save Changes to save it.
Now this plugin will block Gravatar but keep the user avatar functionality.
To update a user’s profile picture, they just need to go to their Profile page and upload the photo to the website from their computer.
WordPress will now use the custom profile picture instead of the Gravatar. If the user has not uploaded their photo, the default profile picture will be displayed.
