I really love Cloudflare DNS.
As a habit, every time I buy a domain my first job is to put it in Cloudflare DNS.
I believe: Cloudflare DNS is better than DNS of domain registrar.
In addition, including Cloudflare DNS helps me have a centralized place to manage domains. All the work to edit more DNS records, I only go to one place instead of having to log in to the dashboards of different domain name providers.
In today’s article, I will show you the steps to use CloudFlare DNS without using CDN or application firewall (Web Application Firewall – WAF) features.

Why do you only use Cloudflare DNS?
There are a number of reasons you should just use Cloudflare DNS without using other Cloudflare features like CDN or WAF.
Firstly, if your website is a Vietnamese site aimed at Vietnamese readers, using a CDN is not necessary. Many people think that it slows down the website.
Even if your website is aimed at foreign readers, Cloudflare’s CDN is not as good as dedicated CDN services like KeyCDN or MaxCDN.
Because CloudFlare is simply a proxy service. It will add an extra layer before the user accesses the original server.
The full application firewall is only available on the paid plan.
In short, if you just want to use Cloudflare DNS, then see the steps below
How to use Cloudflare DNS
Step 1 :
First, you add your website to Cloudflare. Click the “Add Site” button, then enter the domain name and click the “Begin Scan” button.

Step 2
On the next screen Cloudflare scans the records for your domain. If you just bought a domain you may not see any records.
In this case you can have 3 basic records: CNAME, A, MX record (this record is for receiving mail to the host)

The important point here: you need to switch the cloud for the two A, CNAME records from orange to gray. This ensures that traffic will not go through Cloudflare’s network.
Step 3:
Next, you need to choose the Cloudflare plan. Choose the free option and click the “Continue.”

Step 4:
Now you need to update your domain registrar’s nameserver to Cloudflare. This you go to the domain registrar’s dashboard to do.

Step 5:
Finally, go to the “Overview” tab, click on “Advanced”, and click the “Pause” button. This ensures you only use Cloudflare’s DNS.

That is all.
You already know how to just use Cloudflare DNS without using its other features like CDN or WAF.
